GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Alex Twenge improved to 5-1 overall, winning the nightcap of a doubleheader split against Texas-Pan American Saturday afternoon in Great West Conference play. The sophomore righty threw seven innings, holding the Broncs to just four hits and a pair of runs in earning his team-leading fifth win as the home team won 7-2 after falling 9-0 in the opener.

GAME ONE
UTPA (24-22, 14-5 GWC) got a superb pitching performance from Dusten Knight, who fired a complete game shutout in the opener. The right-hander was on, striking out a career-high 14 UND batters in just seven innings while allowing just four hits.

His offense provided plenty of backup, scoring eight runs by the fourth inning to allow Knight to rear back and deal. UTPA scored three in the second, two in the third and three more in the fourth inning to take a commanding lead.

Taylor Petersen, Jeff Campbell, Tyler Follis and Jacob Threlkeld were the four UND players to notch hits in the first game and 10 different North Dakota batters fell victim to a Knight strikeout in the loss.

GAME TWO
Twenge helped set the tone in the second game, squandering just one hit through five innings. UND (16-18-1, 7-9) scored in each of the first three innings to stake him to a 4-0 advantage.

Leadoff doubles in each of those three frames would come around to score as the UND offense churned out 10 hits in the nightcap. Kris Kwak led off the UND first with a double to right and scored on Zack Trygstad's sacrifice fly for a quick 1-0 UND margin.

In the second, Follis doubled and scored on Threlkeld's triple, who would later cross home on a Kwak single for a 3-0 UND cushion. Three straight hits to open the third helped the UND advantage to 4-0 with Petersen doubling and Trygstad and Campbell singling behind him.

That would be enough for Twenge, who got into a good rhythm early. The first hit off the sophomore didn't come until the third inning. He then mowed through the fourth and fifth innings needing just 15 pitches for the six outs as he ushered UND into the sixth inning with that 4-0 lead.

After UTPA inched within two with a two-spot in the sixth, North Dakota answered with three unearned in the seventh. It started on a Patrick Vandoorne single to right, but the key play in the inning was a out-out grounder booted by the Bronc shortstop to score the first run and keep the inning alive. Follis doubled to score the second run and a sacrfice fly by Wehrli scored the seventh UND run.

With the five-run cushion, Reid Jungling finished off the job by throwing the final two innings, scattering three hits and helping UND to its first conference series win this season.

Petersen -- after six hits on Friday-- reached base five more times Saturday with three walks and a pair of hits Saturday. Kwak, Vandoorne and Follis each had two hits in the second game.

UND continues its 13-game homestand to end the regular season with its final non-conference game Tuesday when it hosts South Dakota State for a single game at 3:00 p.m.
