North Dakota plays its final matches before the start of the Big Sky Conference schedule, heading to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic hosted by Tulane University. UND will head straight from the Big Easy to Vermillion, S.D. for a rivalry match with South Dakota the following Monday.
MIDDLE TENNESSE STATE INVITATIONAL RECAP
North Dakota battled to a pair of five-set matches but UND fell to UAB, Austin Peay, Virginia Tech and host MTSU last weekend. It was the first road trip for North Dakota this season. UND couldn’t catcha break, losing four sets by the minimum two points at the Invite. UND was only outscored by 34 points (364-330) for the entire 16 sets combined at the tournament in tightly-contested battles.
SCOUTING THE RATTLERS
Florida A&M, who competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is 2-4 overall this season with both of those wins coming in five-set affairs with North Florida and UT Chattanooga ... Katherine Huanec leads the Rattlers with 65 kills while Ginna Lopez-Chavez adds 48 and Yeisha Arcia 41 for a team that hits .147 through the early going ... A&M allows its opponents to hits .242, including three matches where its foe has hit over .300 ... This is the first matchup in the all-time series between the schools.
SCOUTING THE LADY TIGERS
Texas Southern, a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), is 3-5 heading into the Classic ... Veronica Azubuike i sthe team’s top weapon offensively, producing 66 kills (3.14/set) at hitting at a .291 clip ... Sarah Wooten sets-up the Lady Tigers’ offense with 119 assists (5.95/set) ... This is the first matchup between the teams.
SCOUTING THE GREEN WAVE
Tulane is now a perfect 8-0 heading into its own tournament after a 3-0 sweep of cross-town rival New Orleans Wednesday ... The win marked a school-record for victories to start a season ... The Green Wave have already surpassed last season’s win total (6) ... Four of Tulane’s wins have come via sweep ... The team averages an impressive .276 attack percentage this season ... Annie Shurtz (99) and Tea Juric (92) lead the team in kills ... UND and Tulane will be playing for the first time.
SCOUTING THE COYOTES
South Dakota-- a Summit League member-- will be playing in the Montana State tournament this weekend before its Monday night tilt with UND ... USD is 5-3 going into the weekend with wins over three Big Sky Conference schools (Idaho State, Montana and Eastern Washington) ... Montana State will be its fourth opponent from the Big Sky on Saturday and UND will be the fifth two day later ... Kendall Kritenbrink averages 4.03 kills per set, racking-up 129 finishes already this season with three 20+ kill performances ... Monday will be the 73rd meeting all-time with UND holding a 49-23 edge in the series, including nine straight wins.
The University of North Dakota volleyball program holds a 594-712-3 (.455) record all-time since the first game was played on Sept. 22, 1976. Under head coach Ashley Hardee, UND is 89-39 (.695).

North Dakota is picked to finish fourth in the Preseason Big Sky Coaches Poll ... UND returns nearly its entire roster for a season ago as North Dakota did not have a senior on its roster in 2012 ... North Dakota is 89-35 in head coach Ashley Hardee’s tenure (5 seasons) ... UND is in its second season in the Big Sky Conference, qualifying for the league tournament a year ago with a 10-10 league record.
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
UND appears in several categories in the national statistics led by a 62nd rank in team blocks per set (2.46). Senior Lisa Parlich is 80th in NCAA D-I in hitting percentage with her .382 clip which ranks second in the Big Sky Conference. Ronni Munkeby is 98th with 1.19 blocks per set, fourth-best in the league with Parlich’s 1.04 average coming in 10th in the conference.
DID I HEAR A ‘NINER’ IN THERE?
UND head coach Ashley Hardee is a perfect 9-0 against South Dakota in his head coaching career. The schools, once conference members in the Great West together, have played each other in every year since Hardee has come on campus.

Coach Hardee can brag about beating the other Dakota schools to the tune of 15-2 combined. Hardee has a 9-0 record against South Dakota, 4-1 against South Dakota State (including a win this season) and 2-1 vs. North Dakota State.

UND FOURTH IN PRESEASON BIG SKY POLL
The University of North Dakota volleyball team was picked to finish fourth in the 2013 Big Sky Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Reigning regular-season champion Portland State was the top vote-getter with seven first-place votes (coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams). Idaho State (2 first-place votes) was second with Big Sky Tournament champion Northern Colorado third. Northern Arizona finished fifth in the voting and had the other two first-place nods.
RIGHT ON PAR-LICH
Senior Lisa Parlich was named to the UND Classic All-Tournament Team. It marks the second straight season for that honor after she was the MVP of the 2012 tourney.
YOU BETTY RECOGNIZE
North Dakota is 68-36 all-time at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, which opened prior to the 2004 season. Since 2008, UND is a staggering 46-10 (.821) including a school-record 13 wins in 2011.

HITTING THE BOOKS
The UND volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award with a cumulative 3.461 grade point average last season. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Midco Sports Network will televise three UND volleyball matches as part of its broadcast deal that includes football, men’s hockey, women’s hockey, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. The first televised volleyball match is the highly-anticipated in-state battle with North Dakota State on Sep. 30. An Oct. 24 Big Sky match against Montana is the second on the docket and the Nov. 21 match against Northern Arizona rounds out the TV schedule. All three matches will air in high definition.
