GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Former University of North Dakota head women's basketball coach Gene Roebuck ,along with his wife, Karolyn, will be honored at halftime of Saturday's game against North Dakota State with the establishment of a scholarship endowment in his name. The Gene and Karolyn Roebuck athletic scholarship endowment will support tuition and fees for UND women's basketball student-athletes.

"It'll be an exciting day to be able to honor Gene and Karolyn for all of their service to UND and women's basketball," current head coach Travis Brewster said. "Coach Roebuck is a Hall of Famer in my book and it will be special to have him and Karolyn at this rivarly game which he helped establish through his many years of hard work. I look forward to carrying forward the tradition for many years."

With over 700 wins to his credit overall, Roebuck left the University of North Dakota as its most decorated coach. In 25 years, Roebuck transformed the UND program into a national powerhouse that generated 13 conference titles (11 NCC, 2 Great West), 21 postseason appearances (20 NCAA DII, 1 WBI) and three national titles (NCAA DII).

Roebuck was hired as North Dakota's head coach in June 1987. During Roebuck's tenure, UND went 628-145 and captured three consecutive NCAA DII national championships (1997-99). He produced the WBCA Player of the Year four times and guided eight NCAA MVPs and one Great West Player of the Year. In addition, 19 players were named All-America, 52 players were named All-NCC and seven were named All-GWC.

During his tenure, he mentored 39 Academic All-Conference players. Three of his students-athletes would go on to earn NCAA postgraduate scholarships. His teams were consistently among the top teams in the country in cumulative grade point average, finishing in the top 25 seven times overall, including each of his final five years. Eight student-athletes earned Verizon Academic All-District VII First Team accolades and five would be named Academic All-America.

Gene and Karolyn Roebuck will be recognized at halftime of Saturday's televised game against North Dakota State. Tip is slated for 2:00 p.m. from the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
