FARGO, N.D. – The headline suggested by North Dakota track and field head coach Kevin Galbraith was, “Bissell the Missile launches a big throw.”

He was referring to a record-setting weight throw by senior Jakob Bissell today at North Dakota State’s Bison Open. Bissell threw a mark of 58 feet, 10 ¾ inches, surpassing the previous record of 57-9 that was set by teammate Roman Waldera one year ago at South Dakota.

Waldera, for his part, placed fifth in the event today with a throw of 54-10.00.

Bisssell’s mark was the fourth-best in the Big Sky Conference this season, pending the results of other meets around the conference.

UND also received a notable performance from freshman Tyler Olson. The Buffalo, Minn., native won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.07 seconds.

Elsehwere, sophomore D’Monte Farley was the runner-up in the 200-meters with a personal record of 22.18 seconds, and also took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 6 ¾ inches.

Senior Sam Saccoman was the runner-up in the 5,000-meters with a time of 14 minutes, 57.89 seconds, while classmate Shawn Johnson provided a runner-up effort in the shot put with a mark of 55-07.50.

Sophomore Jimmy Evers was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a PR of 8.39. The Grand Forks native also teamed with Olson, Jared Michel and John LeClerc for a fourth-place finish in the 4x400 relay. They recorded a time of 3:24.71.

UND is back in action next Friday at South Dakota’s Indoor Twilight.
