GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota junior defenseman Nick Mattson has been named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Third Team by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Mattson is an entrepreneurship major with a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average. In April, he received the NCAA Elite 89 Award for men’s ice hockey for having the highest grade-point average among NCAA Frozen Four participants.

He was also named to the academic all-conference team by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), the second straight year he has earned academic all-conference honors. The Chanhassen, Minn., native has been named to the Dean’s List in each of his first five semesters at UND.

A 2010 draft pick of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, Mattson appeared in 40 games in 2013-14 and ranked fifth among NCHC defensemen with a career-high 23 points. He also led UND’s defensemen with  a career-high 19 assists.

The academic All-America at-large teams honor student-athletes in the sports of women’s bowling, women’s crew, men’s and women’s fencing, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s rifle, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s wrestling.

Notes: UND women’s hockey sophomore goalie Shelby Amsley-Benzie was also named a 2014 Capital One Academic All-American today, giving UND four academic All-Americans so far in 2013-14. Volleyball senior Ronni Munkeby and baseball senior Patrick Riewer were recognized earlier this year … UND has now had at least two academic All-Americans in each of the last eight years and in 14 of the past 15 years … Mattson is the third academic All-American in UND men’s hockey history, joining two-time honoree Karl Goehring (2000-01, 1999-00) and Chay Genoway (2008-09).
