OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of North Dakota soccer team played a close first half with the University of Omaha, but fell behind in the second as the Mavericks downed UND, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.

“The first half we played very disciplined, stuck to our game plan, created chances and really minimized a lot of chances for Omaha,” head coach Matt Kellogg said. “In the first ten minutes of the second half we controlled a lot of the flow still. However, with it being the second game of the weekend, and not having a very deep bench, we started getting heavy legs and started playing chase the ball.”

It marked the first game of the season that North Dakota has played through the first half without conceding a goal. UND also out-shot the Mavericks, 7-6, in the first half.

The turning point came in the 59th minute when Nebraska Omaha’s Ava Doestsch scored the game’s first goal. After that point, the Mavericks continued to control the game, out-shooting UND, 14-3, in the second half.

In the 67th minute North Dakota was called for a foul inside the penalty box giving Nebraska Omaha a PK and its final goal of the game.

“We took a step forward today,” Kellogg said. “We tweaked a few things in our game plan yesterday and the girls responded well. We’re just working on taking small steps in moving forward.”

North Dakota heads out for one more road trip before opening the home schedule on Sept. 11. UND takes on Western Illinois on Friday at 3 p.m., before playing against Iowa State on Sunday at noon.
