MACOMB, Ill., -- The University of North Dakota women’s soccer team couldn’t get its offense going on the road, losing a 2-0 decision to Western Illinois on Friday afternoon.

Both goals conceded by UND came within the first 10 minutes of each half. The Leathernecks opened the scoring in the ninth minute, before adding to their lead in the 53rd minute.

“The good news is, looking ahead at our schedule and after reviewing today’s game, is that the mistakes that we made today are very small,” head coach Matt Kellogg said. “There aren’t any major mistakes, just a bunch of small things, that if we can correct, we’ll be in a much better position to create more chances on the attack and minimize the amount of chances the other teams get.”

North Dakota created chances in the game through some well played runs through the Leatherneck’s backline; but WIU’s defense responded each time to keep UND off the board.

Western Illinois out-shot North Dakota 29-8, while the shots on goal were more closely matched at 7-4, in favor of WIU.

“I thought Amanda Dahl worked hard, she put herself in good positions to be successful today; and that’s half of the battle, getting into the right position to find success,” Kellogg commented. “Zoe Foster played well too. She’s a freshman that we put in the midfield today and I thought she was another person that put herself in good positions to be successful. She has that attacking mindset coming out of the midfield which is very valuable to us.”

UND goalkeeper Kristi Hestdalen made five saves in the contest giving her a total of 234 career saves, only six shy of becoming the all-time saves leader at North Dakota. WIU split time in net between Laura Atkinson and Victoria Kappel.

North Dakota finishes its three-week road trip to start the 2013 season with a visit to Iowa State on Sunday. The game against the Cyclones is set to begin at noon.
