GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Goals by Allyssa Kenney and Whitney Peterson vaulted visiting Idaho State to a 2-0 victory over North Dakota today at blustery Bronson Field.
The Bengals evened their overall record to 7-7-2 while improving to 4-2-2 in Big Sky Conference action. The loss dropped North Dakota to 2-15-1 overall and 1-7-0 in the Big Sky.
Kenney opened the scoring in the first half with an unassisted goal -- her second of the season -- at 27:52. The junior midfielder had her header attempt blocked in front of the UND goal, but the ball ricocheted right back to Kenney and she lofted a kick over top of goalkeeper Kristi Hestdalen to give the Bengals a lead they would not relinquish.
ISU sealed the victory in the second half on Whitney Peterson's third goal of the season, which made it 2-0 at 59:59.
"You give a good team like ISU some chances and they’re going to make you pay for it, and they did just that," said UND head coach Matt Kellogg.
Hestdalen and her ISU counterpart, Sheridan Hapsic, each recorded two saves.
The Bengals attempted 16 total shots to UND's five.
A bright spot for UND, according to Kellogg, was the showing of players forced to play out of position due to injuries.
"We came into the game with a couple key injuries so we had to move some players around," said Kellogg. "I think the players like (sophomore) Andrea Hyduke, who we moved from a forward position to an outside back -- which is a pretty big change for her -- I thought she did a fantastic job dealing with it."
"You saw moments (today) where we were disciplined defensively. We were able to transition and get numbers out wide, and get numbers in the attack," said Kellogg. "If we can do that consistently on Sunday we’ve got a chance to send the seniors off with a win."
