AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior Shawn Johnson, the University of North Dakota's first-ever competitor at the NCAA Track and Field Preliminary Championships, finished 19th among 48 throwers today in the discus.

Johnson, who entered the NCAA West Prelims ranked 31st nationally, vaulted up those rankings after just missing his personal record with a throw of 53.84 meters (176 feet, 8 inches).

The Eveleth, Minn., native logged the second-best throw in his 16-man preliminary flight. Johnson's 19th-place overall effort left him just shy of a berth in the discus finals, which takes the top 16 preliminary finishers.

Johnson, an all-Big Sky Conference performer this year, will compete in the shot put on Friday, while teammate D'Monte Farley (Fr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) will compete in the triple jump on Saturday.

On the women's side, freshman Jayd Eggert (Minot, N.D.) will compete in the javelin on Saturday.
