GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota junior thrower Shawn Johnson made program history today, becoming UND’s first-ever student-athlete to earn Big Sky Conference weekly track and field honors.

Johnson was named the Big Sky Conference Men’s Field Co-Athlete of the Week for his outstanding performance last Friday at the North Dakota State Tune-Up, sharing the honor with Weber State’s Derek Harrebomee.

A native of Eveleth, Minn., Johnson threw the top Big Sky discus and shot put marks of the weekend on Friday in Fargo. His discus throw of 53.94 meters (177’) was not only a personal record, but the second-best mark in the Big Sky Conference all season. He just missed his PR in the shot put, reaching 17.27 meters (56’8”) and finishing second in the event behind only Minnesota’s Mark Jennings (17.73).

Johnson will enter the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championship ranked 66th  nationally in the discus and 69th in the shot put. He owns the second-best hammer, discus, indoor and outdoor shot, and weight throws in school history.

Sacramento State’s Caprice Powell and Paul Lyons were named women’s and men’s track athletes of the week.

The Big Sky Championship takes place May 8-11 in Portland, Ore.
