Ogden, Utah - The University of North Dakota softball team was defeated in its first two Big Sky Conference games against Weber State on Friday afternoon at the Wildcat Softball Field. The first game included a ten minute snow delay.

Weber State 7, North Dakota 3

North Dakota fell in the first game against Weber State by a score of 7-3.

“This was our first taste of what it means to be in a conference,” Head Coach Eric Oakley said. “Pre-conference records don’t mean anything. Conference games are a dogfight… but today only one dog showed up.”

UND started the game strong by scoring two runs in the first inning. Senior Cami Bennett (Grants Pass, Ore.) scored the first run off a Caralyn Chewning (Willamina, Ore.) double to right center and junior D Jantzer (Grants Pass, Ore) scored the second run.

UND added its third and final run in the second inning of the game when junior Amanda Johnson (Ashby, Minn.) hit a homerun.

Weber State rallied to score seven unanswered runs including a three-run fifth inning and a two-run sixth which included a homerun by Alyson Kulp.

North Dakota’s starting pitcher, Chewning, pitched for four inning giving up four hits and was then relieved by senior Emma Gronseth (Forest Grove, Ore.).

Weber State 6, North Dakota 3

UND once again played for its first conference win but fell by a score of 6-3 on Friday evening.

“These games cannot be approached the same as a mid-week DH with SDSU. There is much more on the line now,” Head Coach Eric Oakley said. “The teams we’re playing understand that and hopefully now we do too.”

North Dakota was the first on the scoreboard when senior Kenna Olsen (Issaquah, Wash.) hit a homerun off Weber State’s Morgan Allaband in the second inning.

Weber State came back in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs. The Wildcats also added a run in the third inning.

Allaband was able to hold UND scoreless until the seventh inning. Sophomore Taylor Donnelly (Lakeville, Minn.) and senior Cami Bennett (Grants Pass, Ore.) scored the runs for North Dakota.

Senior Abby Jo Tometich (Aberdeen, Wash.) was on the mound for UND, pitching all six innings and giving up seven hits.

North Dakota’s record fell to 7-19 on the season and 0-2 in Big Sky Conference play.

UND will play Weber State on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Wildcat Softball Field.
