OGDEN, Utah (April 16, 2013) - The Big Sky Conference, in consultation with the University of North Dakota and Sacramento State athletic administrators, has cancelled the three-game softball series between the schools scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 19 & 20 in Grand Forks, N.D. According to Conference bylaws, the games will not be rescheduled.
Grand Forks has been hit with a series of unusual spring storms which also caused the cancellation of a three-game series with Southern Utah last week. North Dakota tried various fields in an attempt to play the games, but snow and standing water would not allow for safe play. Just yesterday,
Grand Forks received more snow on already saturated fields, prompting UND administrators to contact the Conference.
“North Dakota, Sacramento State and the Conference have acted in unison and cancelled the games,” said Ron Loghry, Senior Associate Commissioner. “It has been an unfortunate series of events for all teams involved, but entirely unavoidable due to the weather.”
According to Conference bylaws, a team must complete 65 percent of its scheduled Conference games to be eligible for the post season Championship in which the top four teams participate.
There are 18 Conference games per team, so a team must complete a minimum of 12 games to be eligible. North Dakota must complete its remaining Conference schedule to be eligible for the postseason.
