WICHITA, Kan. – The University of North Dakota softball team dropped two games on the opening day of the Shocker Softball Classic, losing 8-0 to UMKC and 16-1 to hosts Wichita State on Friday.

In the opening game against UMKC, North Dakota recorded three hits as Rachael Waynick, Elizabeth Cudney and D Jantzer all got on base for UND. Freshman Kaylin VanDomelen made her collegiate debut starting in the circle, but after pitching three innings, Megan Hedstrom came in for relief.

“The positive news is that VanDomelen was able to pitch some innings for the first time this season,” head coach Eric Oakley said. “UMKC is a team that we can learn from. They just made their plays and put the bat on the ball.

Following up later in the game, North Dakota faced a heavy-hitting host team in Wichita State. UND got on the board first in the opening inning after a fly out to center field by Kim Granata scored Taylor Hansen.

Unfortunately, the Shockers had a response and went on to score five runs in the bottom of the first, en route to a 16-run stretch through the first three innings.

North Dakota had four hits in the game, including two from Amanda Johnson. Granata and Nicole Babrowski recorded one hit each. Megan Hedstrom started in the circle for UND, but Sophie Pratt stepped in after 1.2 innings of work by Hedstrom.

“Our defense was there, but our offense and pitching was not,” Oakley commented after the second game. “Right now we are trying to do too much with each play and each at-bat. Once we settle down we will be okay.”

North Dakota continues its slate at the Shocker Softball Classic with a lone game tomorrow against Iowa State at 10:30 a.m.
