POCATELLO, Idaho --- The University of North Dakota softball team returned to action for the first time since April 3rd and the long break, due to inclement weather in the Midwest region, didn’t seem to do it any favors as it lost a pair of games to Idaho State today 10-2 and 19-0, respectively.

“There is no excuse for how we played today,” head coach Eric Oakley said. “This is a low point for the program. The only thing that can save today is to ensure that we only get better from here.”

A highlight for UND was the performance of junior Caralyn Chewning (Willamina, Ore.) who amassed half of UND’s hits, going 3-for-5 on the day to improve her average to .305 on the season.

ISU’s bats came out on fire in the opener as it collected 12 hits in the game and surpassed that total in the finally with a 20-hit performance.

Led by a trio of players, Idaho State’s Vicky Galasso, Terah Blackwell and Amanda Fitzsimmons each had three home runs on the day.

North Dakota falls to 10-26 on the year and 2-6 in Big Sky Conference play while the first-place Bengals improve to 25-19 and 11-3 in the league.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.




Johnson stopped 43 of 45 shots in the tournament and was perfect in the third period both nights.
