Men's basketball doles out team awards

Grand Forks, N.D. - The North Dakota men's basketball team officially put a close to a memorable 2012-13 season on Friday by holding its annual awards ceremony at the Gorecki Alumni Center on UND's campus.

The season was a special campaign for seventh-year head coach Brian Jones and his squad as the program began its journey in the Big Sky and achieved feats no other league newcomer had in 50-plus years of the conference's existence.

Juniors Troy Huff, Aaron Anderson and Jamal Webb all reached career milestones, while Jones also collected the 100th win of his UND career late in the season.

Those four were honored with special commemorative basketballs that highlight their individual accomplishments, while Jones also announced Team MVP and Most Improved Player Awards along with the Phil Jackson Award, which is given to the UND basketball player who demonstrates the work ethic and same blue collar approach that Jackson did during his playing days at the university.

2012-13 Achievements
• 12 Big Sky wins were most ever by a league newcomer and third-place finish was also the best by a first-year member
• Three straight postseason appearances in the CIT - earned an at-large bid
• Advanced to the Big Sky Championship semifinals
• Junior Troy Huff was named to the All-Big Sky Tournament Team
• Huff also earned first team All-Big Sky honors (one of two unanimous choices, while classmate Aaron Anderson was named to the All-Big Sky second team
• Huff became first UND player in Division I history to land on an All-American team when he was named to the Lou Henson Mid Major Team
• Huff and Anderson also became the first junior teammates to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau in the same season in UND history.
• Huff won the Big Sky scoring title averaging a career-high 19.2 ppg - he is only second UND player to score at least 400 points in each of his first three seasons
• Huff was one of two Big Sky players to earn three Player of the Week honors through the season despite missing eight games with a broken jaw
• Anderson averaged a career-high 13.3 ppg this season and his 86 percent clip from the foul line was third highest percentage in UND single-season history
• Junior Jamal Webb broke UND’s all-time steals record after leading the Big Sky with 74 steals during the season. He sits a top the list 183 career steals
• Webb also ranks third on UND’s all-time charts in career assists with 380
• Senior Mitch Wilmer blocked a career-high 47 shots during his senior season, which tied for the ninth most in a single season at UND
• Head coach Brian Jones won his 100th career game at Eastern Washington on March 2
