GRAND FORKS, N.D -- Having won the femal team community service award the past two years at UND, the University of North Dakota softball team is continuing the tradition of giving this season.

During four Saturdays this fall, the softball team has worked with the Special Olympics bowling program at Liberty Lanes in East Grand Forks, Minn.

“It’s inspiring to watch our student-athletes work with other athletes in the community," head coach Eric Oakley said. "The relationship between Special Olympics and UND Softball, which was established before I arrived here, is a very strong one. We support them with their bowling, and they come to our games and support us. Our team truly values the time spent we spend with these athletes. We are thankful that they include us each year.”

“It’s very rewarding to be a part of it, and I really enjoy working with the athletes and it's great to see how excited and appreciative they are" senior pitcher Caralyn Chewning said.

The softball team is back-to-back winners of the UND Night of Champions Female Team Community Service Award.
