Men's cross country eighth at Big Sky Championship

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The University of North Dakota men's cross country team placed eighth today at the Big Sky Conference Championship, the program's first-ever appearance at the league's championship meet.

Host Northern Arizona ran away with its sixth consecutive men's championship, paced by the meet's top three individual performers and four of the top seven. NAU's Brian Shrader took first place with a time of 24:55.9. He was followed by teammates Matt McElroy and Futsum Zienasellassie, who finished second and third, respectively. The Wildcats finished with 24 points to defeat runner-up Weber State (54).

North Dakota placed eighth with 223 points to finish ahead of Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado and Portland State.

Junior Sam Saccoman (Hibbing, Minn.) capped his first season at North Dakota by pacing the team with a time of 27:00.3. Teammates Nate Peterson (Horace, N.D.), Jerrod Braam (Jr., Pequot Lakes, Minn.), Ross Nelson (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) and Parker Wharram (Fr., Independence, Minn.) were all tightly bunched behind Saccoman, with each runner clocking in under 28 minutes.
