EVANSTON, Ill.-- The University of North Dakota men's swimming team sits in third place after day one at the three-day TYR Invite, hosted by Northwestern University. The host Wildcats set the pace through seven events.
"We started off well with good swims in the 200 freestyle relays," UND head coach Steve Parsons said. "They were season bests for both our men and our women. Overall, a great evening of swims. We came out with a lot of energy and kept that going throughout most of the evening. But this is a three day meet and we have two more days of swimming left. We will have to keep that same level of energy going for the next two days."
Adam Gannon had a pair of second-place showings on the evening, taking runner-up in the 200 IM and the 50 free. He etched a 1:52.95 time in the 200 IM and his 26.01 time in the championship final of the 50 breaststroke Friday was good for second place and 17 team points. Ian Ballantyne finished fourth, Wesley Schultz was fifth and Austin Smith grabbed seventh in an impressive UND showing in that event. Aaron Chanas-LaRue, George Philbin and Daniel Jacobson all qualified for the 500 free championship final with LaRue taking third and Philbin touching in sixth with Jacobson eighth. Schultz etched a 21.24 time in the 50 free to advance to the evening championship where he posted a 21.20 for eighth place.
The 200 free and 400 medley relays each took third.
