GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- The University of North Dakota swimming and diving teams returned to competition Friday hosting Grand Canyon University, dropping a pair of close duals at Hyslop Pool. The Lopes pulled out a 124-113 win on the women's side and the GCU men were victorious, 129-107.

"I was really impressed with how we came back from our training trip a couple days ago," UND head coach Chris Maiello said. "Credit Grand Canyon, they have a great team and it was fun racing against them in what was our first racing since November."

North Dakota winners on Friday included Ethan Shrader, who won the 1650 freestyle with a 17:04.79 time, nearly 15 seconds better than the competition. UND continued its impressive distance swims as Aaron Chanas-LaRue won the 500 freestyle (4:44.48). Austin Smith won the 100 breaststroke with a 56.67 time.

Michael Golling won the 1-meter dive with a 289.65 score, just missing out on an NCAA zone-qualifying score. Rick Eberle was second and Clayton Metcalf third for North Dakota. Eberle took the 3-meter competition with a 337.30 score.

On the women's side, Morgan Lynch won the 500 freestyle, touching in 5:09.92.  Camille Merwin (1:06.76) and Nicole Stevens (1:07.00) went one-two in the 100 breaststroke

Rachael Waldbillig's 268.95 score in the 3-meter was the top mark and she also won the short board competition (268.05). Lexi Eissinger was second from both the 1- and 3-meter boards.

"Rachael Waldbillig qualified for NCAA zones on 1-meter so she's headed back there along with Rick Eberle who's already qualified," UND head diving coach Brian Strom said. "I hope to have another qualifier soon with Michael Golling. He was very close today. Overall, a good performance coming off the training trip and the transition back indoors from outdoors."

UND and Grand Canyon will dual again Saturday at Hyslop with diving beginning at 11:00 a.m. and the full meet at noon.
