The only break the University of North Dakota football players have been catching so far during fall camp is one from Mother Nature. The team worked out in full pads again on Thursday at Memorial Stadium as temperatures were the coolest they have been since camp opened last week.

"It's a nice break for the playeres, but as a coach I want it to be hotter out here," UND head coach Chris Mussman said.

Even though the players have avoided those sometimes scorching-hot days that roll through the Peace Garden State in August, they were not avoiding each other on Thursday. The first live tackling periods were woven into the two-hour session with some mixed results.

"It was another good give-and-take day," Mussman added. "I think the defense is kind of ahead of the learning curve of the offense right now, but that is expected. It was a good day though, good to see how some of the younger players react to the live stuff."

Practice Notebook
  • The first and second-team units got most of the work in the first team sessions in the middle of practice before the last 10 minutes were spent with a glorified scrimmage between the third teamers (made up mostly of the newcomers).
  • Defensively, freshman tackle Mike Edwards (Sun Prairie, Wis.) was a disruptive force in the last two periods. He made a pair of tackles in the offensive backfield and likely would have picked up a sack if the quarterbacks were allowed to be taken down.
  • Freshman Dan Konowalski (Milwaukee, Wis.) was also in on a pair of nice defensive plays, shedding a block on a bubble screen to take down classmate Kenny Golladay (Chicago, Ill.). Konowalski also had a pass breakup during the closing periods.
  • Golladay hauled in a couple of pass receptions to lead the young receivers. He teamed up with freshman signal callers Joe Mollberg (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Ryan Bartels (Sycamore, Ill.).
