Grand Forks, N.D. - Head coach Chris Mussman announced on Friday that current wide receivers coach Luke Schleusner has been promoted to the role of offensive coordinator on his staff.

Schleusner, who played wide receiver at UND and was part of the 2001 Division II National Championship team, will continue to coach his former position players as well.

"Last year, we made Luke our passing-game coordinator and I was thoroughly impressed with how well he communicated his ideas and how organized he was," Mussman said. "The result was one of the best passing seasons in UND history, so this was an easy decision for me to make. He is ready for this role and excited for the opportunity."

Schleusner inherits an offense that did put up record-breaking numbers in the passing game a season ago as fifth-year senior quarterbacks Braden Hanson and Marcus Hendrickson combined to pass for a single-season record 3,268 yards and 30 touchdowns.

"I appreciate the trust that Coach Mussman has shown in me to take on this role," Schleusner said. "It's an exciting opportunity and one that I am looking forward too. Coach (Greg) Breitbach did a great job and I learned a lot from him the past two seasons.

"We will continue to use a lot of the system that we have in place, but we will also add some new wrinkles and continue to be an attacking offense. Fortunately, we have some great players returning and some younger guys with lots of potential that we will work hard with this spring to get ready for the fall."

Two of Schleusner's wide receivers garnered All-America recognition in 2012. Junior Greg Hardin became the first All-American in UND's Division I era (since 2008) after he was named to The Sports Network Third Team, while redshirt freshman Jameer Jackson was named to the College Sports Journal Freshman All-America Team.

Hardin was also a first team All-Big Sky performer and named the College Football Performance Awards Elite FCS Wide Receiver of the Year. Jackson was a Jerry Rice Award Finalist, which is an honor given annually to the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision.

This will be Schleusner's third season on his alma mater's staff after spending six seasons at Minnesota State, including his last two as the Mavericks' passing-game coordinator.

With Schleusner's elevation and the departure of former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Greg Breitbach to take on the head coaching duties at Millersville University, Mussman also announced on Friday that running backs coach Danny Freund will take over as the quarterbacks coach and Benny Boyd will take on the role as special teams coordinator.

"I'm excited for Danny to be able to coach his old position and for our young quarterbacks to learn from who I think was one of the best signal callers to play at UND," Mussman said. "One of many things Danny did well as our quarterback was keep the game simple and that is something I want him to instill in our young guys at that position.

Boyd was the assistant special teams coordinator in 2012 and will take over the primary role moving forward.

"Benny has been involved with our special teams since he arrived here," Mussman said. "He is well respected by our players and will provide a commanding voice for that area."

Freund and Boyd are both in their third seasons on Mussman's staff.
