Daily Report

Head coach Chris Mussman and his squad took to the Memorial Stadium field for the first time this fall on a perfect morning for football.  With temperatures hovering in the high 60s and low 70s throughout on a sun-drenched day in Grand Forks, the team got in 18 periods of work.

"I really liked what I saw today. Both sides of the ball had good energy and played at a nice tempo," Mussman said afterwards. "It was a great start to our practices. I liked what our coaches were doing. Everything was crisp."

- Senior Chavon Mackey, who is switching to safety this season, provided a spark for the defense in the opening skelly drills by intercepting a corner route thrown by Joe Mollberg.
- Senior co-captains Garrison Goodman and Blair Townsend provided the hardest collision of the day in what was supposed to be a no-contact drill. Goodman made a nice break on a pass and jarred the ball loose from Townsend, who took the brunt of the hit. However, the savvy senior responded on the next play with a nice diving catch over the middle.
- With Seth Wisthoff, who graduated, and Taylor Grant, who was a two-year starter on long snaps, no longer on the squad, there were several players working on snapping both for punts and place kicks. Among those getting in some snapping work were redshirt freshman Brandon Larson, who is also a reserve linebacker; Casey Young, who is a sophomore wide receiver; and defensive tackle Mike Edwards.
- There was also a long line of players auditioning for punt return duties. That group included junior running back Jer Garman, wide receivers R.J. McGill and Kenny Golladay and cornerback Chris Brown.

What's on tap for Sunday
Sunday is nearly a mirror image of Saturday's schedule except the players get the night off following the team dinner. The team will be back on the practice field at 9:15 a.m. and have another afternoon of NCAA Education.

Student-Athlete Spotlight: No. 3 Jake Miller
There are only a handful of players on the UND football roster that did not spend a season as a redshirt player and senior Jake Miller is one of them. The Bismarck natives' career has gone a little faster than most of his teammates, but he is looking forward to a bounce-back senior season and fall camp is the natural starting point for that.

"Fall camp is definitely something you look forward too," Miller said. "You take all summer to get ready for this point in the season and now it's here. You're one step closer to playing in that first game and fall camp is a stepping stone to get there. All the guys are excited to get back on the football field."

Miller spent his summer in Grand Forks working out with teammates, hanging out with them and also getting some work done at Kings Walk Golf Course when he was not preparing for the upcoming season.

"The summer was great," Miller said. "It seemed like every other weekend we had something going on with the guys in town whether it was a barbeque or just a get together. Guys are all on board and we're excited to put it all together."

Miller and his teammates had to make an adjustment to the Big Sky brand of football in 2012 after coming off a co-Great West Conference Championship in 2011 when he rushed for a career-high 942 yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore. It was an up-and-down season that ended with a 5-6 record and 3-5 mark in league play.

"First year, we learned that we can't let things snow ball on us," he said. "I think we lost focus at times and things got ugly in a couple of games, but we have a veteran group here that learned from last year's experience that we have to weather out the storm and good things are going to happen."

Miller's production dipped a little as a junior, but he still led the team in rushing with 543 yards and also added 15 receptions for 119 yards. He found the endzone three times during the campaign and, ironically, all of his scoring plays came from 36 yards out (two rushes and one reception).

Miller is poised and ready to return to the form of his sophomore season when he was the first Great West player in league history to earn three consecutive Player of the Week honors. He'll also be counted on to help take the pressure off, which ever redshirt freshman signal caller will be under center in 2013.

So far, Miller has liked what he has seen. "They are both looking great right now and both are great competitors," he added.  "I expect to see good things from both of those guys this season."
