GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota head football coach Bubba Schweigert announced on Monday that Alex Tillman – a four-year transfer from the University of Houston – will play his final collegiate season for the Green and White. Tillman spent his first four collegiate seasons playing for the Cougars, who are now members of the American Athletic Conference.

Tillman saw his most extensive action as a junior in 2013 as a reserve defensive back and key special teams contributor. Tillman appeared in all 13 games, making nine total tackles as UH finished 8-5 and played in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala.

“We think Alex will come in and compete right away for playing time at the cornerback position,” Schweigert said. “He is a physical defender that can play in one-on-one situations and also has the skills to play in zone schemes. He was a key special teams players at the FBS level as well and we also expect the same out of him in those areas.”

Tillman was a successful prep quarterback at Northshore High School in his hometown of Houston, helping lead his squad to three consecutive district championships and a 34-3 overall record during that run. As a senior, he was named Northshore’s Offensive and Team MVP after throwing for more than 2,000 yards and rushing for over 500 more.

Tillman will have one season of eligibility remaining and adds depth to a UND secondary that only had three healthy cornerbacks participate in the recently concluded spring practices.
