Each day of fall camp, the staff at UNDSports.com will put together a daily report and feature a student-athlete in its #BrickByBrick countdown. Stay tuned to the official website, Instagram (UNDFootball) and Twitter (@UNDFootball) for all the up-to-date information leading up to the season opener vs. Valparaiso on Aug. 29.
COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 14 Days
2013 Media Day Booklet (contains roster, depth chart, bios, 2012 stats)
Head coach Chris Mussman wants to give his team a much-needed day off on Sunday and if they continue to practice like they did during both sessions today, the squad is right on track to do that.
Mussman was pleased overall once again with the tempo the team is playing at and the energy they are bringing to the field every day. Two weeks from today, UND will be kicking off its season against Valparaiso at the Alerus Center and Mussman reminded the players of that after the second practice.
The morning session was spent in full pads, but there were no live drills after going through 10 minutes of full contact in Wednesday's lone session. The afternoon was spent in shells and both sides of the ball took turns throughout both practices serving as scout teams for the opposite side.
- The afternoon session ended with some red zone work for both sides as they were back to working against each other. Sophomore Kenny Golladay made a juggling one-handed catch in front corner of the endzone. Senior Blair Townsend also caught a touchdown pass during the 11-on-11 work.
- The defense made its share of plays too with Chris Brown coming up with an interception on a pass thrown by Jake Hanson late in the afternoon practice.
- Freshman defensive lineman Mike Edwards (redshirt) and Marcus Cheatom are making pushes for playing time along the front line and have been impressive in recent practices.
- The Denver Broncos had a scout on hand at the morning practice. Former UND offensive lineman Chris Kuper returned to practice this week for the NFL club. He also had his contract restructured.
What's on tap for Friday
The team will go back to one full-pad practice on Friday, which will be its 17th of fall camp. There is another "Team Time" scheduled for the evening. These are used to allow the players to break up into different groups and get to know each other better by answering various questions, while also doing other team-building activities.
Student-Athlete Spotlight: No. 62 Joe Kleason
Senior Joe Kleason says he feels like a freshman again in this his last fall camp. There is a good reason for that as Kleason has worked his way back from an injury in the spring of 2012 that allowed him to only play in two games of his junior season a year ago. He came back for the final two games and started at right tackle in the regular season finale at Northern Colorado. Kleason started all 11 games of his redshirt freshman season (2010) and sophomore season (2011) at left guard.
Here's a Q&A with the Eagan, Minn., native, who will be playing along the offensive line this season with former Cretin-Derham Hall linemate Shea Walker.
Last year, you came back late in the year from an injury, how important was that to get your confidence back?
"Not only that, the last two games of last year really helped because I got that out of the way. Otherwise, I'd be sitting here wondering how it is going to hold up. I'm glad I got that out of the way and been able to work hard and work towards this season and forget about last season."
What can fans expect to see from new starting center and old high school teammate Shea Walker (Ian McGurran started the last 44 games at the positiong for UND, so Walker will be only the second player to start at center in the program's Division I era)?
"They can expect a quick moving center with good technique. He really knows how to pull and get out there and block people. We are looking to really move on some people this year as an offensive line."
What are you and senior classmate Darren DeNeui doing to lead the offensive line?
"Well, we are pushing our guys to come out here and work hard everyday. You really do have to practice at game speed or it will be a shock when you get out there for the first time. We're trying to work hard everyday and be ready for that first game when it comes."
How excited are you for this season?
"I'm really excited. It's almost feels like it's been two years since I've been out here. So, it is almost a relief to be get out here and fly around again. It's like I'm a freshman again."
How long have you been playing football?
"Let's see, about 12-13 years. I've been an O-Lineman my whole life. I'm a lifer."
What do you like most about playing the offensive line?
"Hitting. I just like to hit. That is something I like to do. I like run blocking. Pulling is my favorite thing to do. It's fun to see a linebacker's eyes when you see a fast moving offensive lineman and he looks scared at first."
What do you want to do after football?
"I'm a communication major, so I want to finish up my degree. My family owns a business (Unified Screen and Crushing), so I'd really love to work with them. My grandfather started it and now it is run by my parents and some uncles. My older cousins are starting to get into the business right now."
