GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota women’s golf team will waste little time getting acclimated to the Big Sky Conference as head coach Natalie Martinson and her squad will open the 2012-13 season at a tournament hosted by renewed conference rival Montana State. The second-year coach announced her team’s schedule on Monday.
The Bobcat Invitational will be held at the Riverside Country Club in Bozeman, Mont., (Sept. 3-4) and is the first of a schedule 13 events for Martinson’s team.
“It’s an exciting year and we have a great schedule lined up as we transition to the Big Sky Conference,” Martinson said. “There will be some new tournaments, but some familiar ones as well, but it will definitely be more challenging.
“We are going to learn right away at Montana State where we are competitively with the other Big Sky schools and I think that will be a good start for our team as we try to improve upon last year and play better golf.”
Following the Bobcat Invitational, UND will play in a pair of one-day tournaments at the Cobber Open (Sept. 7; Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Green Bay Triangular. The Green and White won the three-team event in Green Bay last season that precedes once again the Green Bay Invitational (Sept. 10-11).
UND will then travel to the Windy City to play in a two-day event hosted by former Great West foe Chicago State. The Cougars are playing host to the CSU Invitational at the Harborside International Golf Center (Sept. 17-18).
The team will then wrap up its fall schedule on the east coast as it travels to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the LPGA Xavier Invitational (Oct. 12-14). The three-day tournament is played at the LPGA International Golf Club, which is the home to the Ladies Professional Golf Association.
UND will open its spring schedule with a pair of trips to Arizona as the squad will play in two events hosted by fellow Big Sky member Northern Arizona. The first is a three-day tournament called The Lumberjack at Ocotillo and will be played Feb. 11-13 in Chandler, Ariz.
UND will return to the same golf course April 21-23 for its first chance at a Big Sky Conference Tournament title. Martinson and company will play in the Red Rocks Invitational (March 2-3) in Sedona, Ariz., as well.
A spring break trip to Las Vegas will allow UND to play in a pair of tournaments hosted by South Dakota State and Bucknell, respectively. The Jackrabbit Invitational is set for March 11-12 at the Primm Valley Golf Club, while the Bison Challenge will be played March 14-15 at the Paiute Golf Resort.
Two familiar tournaments await UND in April as the team will travel to Houston, Texas for the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational (April 1-2) before concluding the regular season at the Creighton Classic (April 15-16) in Omaha, Neb.).
