USA wins gold, UND athletes successful at Worlds

OTTAWA --- The 2013 International Ice Hockey Federations Women’s World Championship came to conclusion yesterday and was highlighted by the United States earning a 3-2 win over Canada to claim the gold medal.

It was the United States fifth gold medal in the last seven years and avenged its overtime loss to the Canadians in the gold-medal game of last year’s WWC on its home soil in Vermont.

In the top division tournament, UND had four current and one former student-athlete competing in the games representing four of the eight teams in the field.

North Dakota’s Jocelyne Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Monique Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) earned their third gold medals in four years with the United States, Michelle Karvinen (Rodovre, Denmark) led Finland to fourth place, Tanja Eisenschmid (Kaufbeuren, Germany) and Susanne Fellner (Fronhofen, Germany) helped Germany to fifth place while Sweden and Johanna Fallman (Lulea, Sweden) swept its relegation series to conclude in seventh place.

Karvinen received multiple individual awards including one of three Best Players of Each Team award, that is selected by the coaches, after leading Finland in goals (three), points (four), shots (18) and game-winning goals (two).

Monique Lamoureux, Karvinen and Eisenschmid each earned Best Player of the Game awards for their respective teams.

Two of the top scorers for the U.S., Jocelyne Lamoureux led the team in assists (five) while Monique Lamoureux was second on the team with four goals.

UND’s Josefine Jakobsen (Aalborg, Denmark), Andrea Dalen (Honofoss, Norway) and Jorid Dagfinrud (Sarpsborg, Norway) are currently competing for their respective countries in the Division I Women’s World Championship in Norway.
