GRAND FORKS, N.D. – After finishing tied for second place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association last season and finishing as runner-up in the 2013 WCHA Final Face-Off, the University of North Dakota women’s hockey team was picked third in the conference preseason coaches’ poll.

In addition, UND ranked fifth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine national preseason poll, receiving 100 points.

North Dakota returns 17 players from last year’s squad that finished with a 26-12-1 overall record. Senior forward Michelle Karvinen returns as the career-points leader in the WCHA, having amassed 42 goals and 66 assists in 63 games.

Freshman defender Halli Krzyaniak received one vote for the WCHA Preseason Rookie of the Year. Krzyaniak enters UND having played her prep career at the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in Kelowna, British Columbia, and has competed with the Canadian Women’s National Under-18 team.

North Dakota begins its season on Sept. 27 with an exhibition against Pursuit of Excellence at 7:07 p.m. UND then starts regular-season action the following weekend, hosting Lindenwood, Oct. 4-5.
