GRAND FORKS, N.D. – For the second time in his career, former University of North Dakota All-American Jonathan Toews will play for Canada in the Winter Olympics. Toews was part of the 25-man roster selected by Hockey Canada today for the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Toews is the third product of UND’s men’s hockey program named to a 2014 Olympic roster, joining Zach Parise and T.J. Oshie of the United States.

It is the second straight Olympic selection for Toews, who was part of Canada’s gold medal-winning team at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native received the Tournament Directorate Award as the top forward and was named to the tournament all-star team after tying for the Olympic lead in assists (seven) and plus/minus (+9). Toews also finished the tournament as Canada's top faceoff man, winning just under 65 percent of his draws.

Toews is one of three UND products who have won Olympic gold, along with goalie Ed Belfour (Canada, 2002) and forward Dave Christian (U.S., 1980). He also won gold with Canada at the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Championships and at the 2007 World Hockey Championship, and won a silver medal at the 2008 World Championship.

Toews now captains the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks and has 44 points (15 goals, 29 assists) in 45 games this season. He has led the Blackhawks to Stanley Cup championships in 2013 and 2010 and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as Stanley Cup Playoffs MVP in 2010.

A two-year standout at UND in 2005-06 and 2006-07, Toews led UND to the NCAA Frozen Four in each of his two seasons and was named a first-team All-American as a sophomore. He finished his collegiate career with 40 goals and 45 assists in 76 career games.
