GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota junior forward Mark MacMillan, who served a key leadership role in the largest charitable fundraiser in UND Athletics history, is one of 18 national candidates for the 2014 BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award.

The award, in its 19th year, recognizes college hockey’s finest citizen and includes players of both genders from Divisions I, II and III hockey.

MacMillan played a vital role in the conception, execution and promotion of UND’s 2014 North Dakota Strong campaign, which raised $33,129.98 for cancer research. Donations were collected at various UND Athletics home events, as well as through Amazon.com payments, North Dakota Strong t-shirt sales at local retailers and a game-used men’s hockey jersey auction at UNDsports.com. Additionally, Amazon pledged and matched a gift of $5,000.

All proceeds from the fundraiser were donated to Mayo Clinic for breast cancer research and will benefit the community of Grand Forks, including patients of Altru Health System, a proud member of the Mayo Clinic Health Network.

MacMillan, who lost his grandmother to breast cancer before he was born and has two aunts who are survivors of the same illness, developed the concept of the game-worn jersey auction that served as the campaign’s central promotion. The custom-made pink jerseys were worn during an Oct. 18 exhibition game and auctioned off at UNDsports.com following the game.

The Penticton, British Columbia, native also served as UND Athletics’ primary spokesperson for the entire North Dakota Strong campaign, tirelessly promoting the fundraiser to local, regional and national print, radio, television and web media outlets.

A fourth-round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2010, MacMillan has 25 goals and 30 assists in 100 collegiate games. The entrepreneurship major was a WCHA Scholar-Athlete and an All-WCHA Academic Team selection as a sophomore last season.

Finalists for the Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February, and the 2014 recipient will be recognized in a ceremony on Friday, April 11 at the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four in Philadelphia.
