GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota junior defenseman Nick Mattson has been named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District Men’s At-Large Team by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Mattson is an entrepreneurship major with a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average. In April, he received the NCAA Elite 89 Award for men’s ice hockey for having the highest grade-point average among NCAA Frozen Four participants. He was also named to the academic all-conference team by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), the second straight year he has earned academic all-conference honors.

The Chanhassen, Minn., native has been named to the Dean’s List in each of his first five semesters at UND.

A 2010 draft pick of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, Mattson appeared in 40 games in 2013-14 and ranked fifth among NCHC defensemen with a career-high 23 points. He also led UND’s defensemen with  a career-high 19 assists.

The academic all-district at-large teams honor student-athletes in the sports of women’s bowling, women’s crew, men’s and women’s fencing, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s rifle, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s wrestling.
