LOS ANGELES-- A school record highlighted Friday's action during day three of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships held at East Los Angeles College. UND sits just six points back of ninth place heading into the final day of competition.

Austin Smith generated a new UND mark in the 100 breaststroke in a strong North Dakota showing in that event. His 55.12 time in the consolation final was good for an 11th place showing while Ian Ballantyne (56.79) and Adam Gannon (56.98) finished 15th and 16th, respectively.

"It was a strong showing on day three," UND head swimming coach Steve Parsons said. "The 400 medley relay started us off and we had a really good session. Adam Gannon had a strong swim in the 100 butterfly. Austin Smith broke the school record in the 100 breast. Austin, Adam and Ian all had good swims in the 100 breast. They all were after that school record and Austin was the one who took it down. It was exciting to see him accomplish that goal. Looking to finish the meet with a strong push."

The 400 medley relay took ninth, clocking a 3:25.56, nearly five whole seconds off their seed time. Gannon was 20th in the 100 fly (49.92) with Smith finishing in 24th (52.13). In the 200 free race, Adam Chanas-LaRue swam a 1:42.00 for 24th place.

In the diving championships held in Colorado Springs, Colo., UND again had another solid day with three divers in the top 16. Rick Eberle was seventh with a 285.10 score from the 1-meter board with Drew Germain in 10th (287.85) and Clayton Metcalf 16th (259.95).

"It was another day with some real good diving," UND head diving coach Brian Strom said. "Drew had a good conciliatory final and Clayton had a good prelim meet. Rick had another steady day as well. We need all four divers to pick up points in the platform event Saturday."

Brigham Young
moved into the top spot Friday and leads UNLV 417-412 heading into the final day of competition. The meet concludes Saturday.
