GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) announced today that North Dakota sophomore Zane Gothberg has been named NCHC Goaltender of the Week while freshman forward Luke Johnson was named NCHC Rookie of the Week.
Gothberg started both games of UND’s sweep at Minnesota Duluth last weekend, running his career-long unbeaten streak to 12 games (11-0-1) in the process. The Thief River Falls, Minn., native recorded his first collegiate shutout with 33 saves in Friday’s 3-0 win, then followed up with 31 saves on 33 shots in Saturday’s 6-2 victory. For the weekend, Gothberg recorded a 1.00 goals against average and .970 save percentage while helping UND kill all nine Minnesota Duluth power plays.
In 21 games (19 starts) this season, Gothberg is 13-5-3 with a 2.12 goals against average and .922 save percentage.
Johnson, a native of Grand Forks, N.D., figured in on all three UND goals on Friday, scoring twice and adding an assist. His first goal stood as the game-winner and was his fifth power-play tally of the season, tying him for the NCHC lead among freshmen in that category. On Saturday, Johnson assisted on Paul LaDue’s game-tying PPG early in the second period that made it a 2-2 game.
In 30 games this season, Johnson leads all UND freshmen in points (17), goals (6) and assists (11).
Nebraska Omaha junior forward Josh Archibald was named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week and Colorado College senior Eamonn McDermott was the NCHC Defenseman of the Week.
