PHILADELPHIA – Incoming University of North Dakota freshman Nick Schmaltz was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round (20th overall) of the 2014 National Hockey League Entry Draft on Friday night.

The Blackhawks moved up from the No. 27 spot in a trade with San Jose in order to draft Schmaltz, whose older brother, Jordan, is a junior defenseman at UND and was a first-round selection (25th overall) of the St. Louis Blues in 2012.

Nick Schmaltz, a 6-foot, 172-pound forward, spent the past two seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he amassed 36 goals and 79 assists for 115 points in 119 games. In 2013-14, Schmaltz had 18 goals and 45 assists in 55 games and competed in the USHL All-Star Game. One year earlier, he was named to the All-USHL Rookie Team after collecting 18 goals and 34 assists in 36 games.

Earlier this month, Schmaltz was named to the 2014 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp Roster by USA Hockey. He led the U.S. in scoring with points en route to a silver medal at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Tournament.

Schmaltz’s family ties to extend beyond the hockey program. His father, Mike (1988-90), and his uncles Marc (1988-91) and Monte (1992-93), all lettered in football at UND.

Schmaltz is the 160th NHL draft pick in the history of UND’s men’s hockey program and the 16th to be selected in the first round.
