VERMILLION, S.D.-- North Dakota athletes posted the top times in 24 of 32 events in dual wins at the University of South Dakota Friday. The UND women defeated the Coyotes, 168-129, while the men were 172-125 winners over USD.

"This was a gritty win for our programs," UND head coach Chris Maiello said. "We need to give USD credit for swimming well in their home pool. I know our results are a direct reflection of the work that was put in this week. I am pleased with our efforts and how we handled a difficult swimming environment. Our student-athletes are in a great spot to continue to improve as we move towards the heart of our season. We are looking forward to multiple weeks of training before our next competition."

The women's 200 medley relay got things started with a win in 2:03.13. Morgan Lynch was one of three UND women to win multiple events Friday as she won the 800 freestyle handily, touching in 9:30.11. She also scored a win in the 400 freestyle (4:38.39), finishing ahead of Ali Church (4:42.51). Kristin Ainsworth won the 100 backstroke, touching in 1:06.50 and later took the 200 event in 2:21.63. Camille Merwin won both backstroke races. She won  the 100 in 1:14.68, beating out teammate Nicole Stevens (1:16.91) and later went one-two with Stevens in the 200 (2:43.11).

Kelsey Richels took the 200 freestyle in a 2:11.45 time. The 200 butterfly went to Teresa DiGregorio, who won in a time of 2:30.26. Courtney Funk bested the competition in the 50 freestyle, going 27.72.

USD's first win on the women's side came in the 1-meter dive as Greysen Hertting won with a 245.50 score, beating out second-place Rachael Waldbillig's 233.75 score. UND's Lexi Eissinger won the 3-meter board with a 248.60 effort.

North Dakota's 400 freestyle relay closed the women's meet with a winning 4:06.58, more than six seconds better than the runner-up squad.

On the men's side, the 200 medley relay also was a winner with a 1:47.38 time top get things started.

Aaron Chanas-LaRue destroyed the competition in the 800 freestyle, finishing nearly 23 seconds better than his closest competitor (8:43.17). Dan Jacobson won the 200 free in 1:58.42 and swam what would have been a winning time in the 200 IM (2:14.05). Austin Smith was the 100 breaststroke champion at 1:06.05, just ahead of Ian Ballantyne (1:07.61). He also took the 200 event with a 2:27.52 clocking.
