GRAND FORKS, N.D. – In its first year of Big Sky Conference membership, the University of North Dakota was the runner-up in the league’s second annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Conference Cup competition.

SAAC members from across the conference competed in three community service projects throughout the 2012-13 season: a T-shirt drive, a shoe collection, and volunteer hours. North Dakota tied for second Southern Utah and Weber State, finishing behind only Northern Colorado.

UND placed second in the volunteers hours portion of the competition, while finishing fourth in the T-shirt and shoe collections. In all, the 11 core members of the Big Sky combined to collect more than 10,500 T-shirts, 5,390 pairs of shoes, and contribute more than 14,590 hours of volunteer hours.

The Big Sky SAAC is comprised of current student-athletes and serves five functions: 1) addressing conference issues affecting student-athlete welfare; 2) providing feedback and distributing information from the NCAA; 3) increasing and improving student-athletes’ understanding of the legislative process; 4) promoting student-athlete participation in the legislative process, and; 5) providing a forum for addressing student-athlete concerns.

The Big Sky Conference SAAC has also made it a priority to promote volunteerism in each institution’s respective community.

UND’s 2012-13 SAAC officers included Ronni Munkeby (President, Volleyball), Katie Houdek (Vice-President, Basketball), Anna Jung (Secretary, Soccer), Kara Fisher (Treasurer, Swimming), Rhaya Ballon (Social Media Fall Coordinator, Soccer), and Courtney Beckwith (Social Media Spring Coordinator, Soccer).
