Ray Richards Golf Course is home to the UND golf and cross country teams' annual home event, the Ron Pynn Invitational. The course is set up as a 5K for women and 8K for men, providing a challenging route well-known in the Upper Midwest.
The Ray Richards Golf Course is a full-service, nine hole, par 36 golf
course designed by renowned landscape architect Robert Bruce Harris of
Chicago. The golf course is named for the late Ray Richards, a Tulsa,
Okla., engineer and UND alum (1906), who donated the land to UND. Located
adjacent to the beautiful campus of the University of North Dakota in
Grand Forks, the course is owned and operated by the university.
The Ray Richards Golf Course mission is to enhance the educational process at UND by providing the University community with a recreational outlet, as well as, a classroom for golf classes conducted for credit. The mission also provides the entire community with a first-class golf facility. It does this by remaining cost efficient and self supporting.
Tee box to green yardages range from 2,637 to 3,309
yards. There is an average of two sand traps on each hole with several
doglegged fairways. The signature hole is #9 which is also the number
one handicap hole. Holes #8 and #9 could arguably be the toughest two
finishing holes in Grand Forks.
The
English Coulee also winds through the course filling two small ponds;
one near the ninth green and the other near the sixth green and seventh
tee. The course contains several small ravines with occasional
inclined lies, elevated greens, and numerous natural hazards. Deciduous
and evergreen trees shelter the fairways and greens.
