FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Last weekend in Grand Forks, Kevin Galbraith and the North Dakota track & field program hosted the second annual UND Indoor Tune-Up. The purpose of such a meet is rather self-explanatory: to allow for one final “tune-up” prior to the conference championship.

For some, whose positioning for the conference meet was already well-established, last Saturday served as a day of rest. For others on the roster needing one final push, it offered a last-chance competition.

Galbraith said the home meet served both purposes as he had hoped.

“Over the last two weeks it was a tale of two approaches,” said Galbraith. “We had some people who were on a consistent progression in the right direction, and we also had some people two meets ago at USD who just fell apart a little bit and that left us scratching our heads. But a lot of the folks pulled together at the Tune-Up and got their mojo back.”

Galbraith is hopeful the team is now positioned as such that it can deliver multiple Big Sky event titles or all-conference performances.

“We’d love some conference titles and top-3 efforts. You always hope you can get people to be ready to have their best day on the day. I feel like the coaching staff has done that,” said Galbraith. “After a certain point, you just sort of turn into a cheerleader.”

UND will be led by a ‘Big 3’ on the women’s side of Katelyn Weber, who is the Big Sky’s top-ranked shot-putter and the conference’s defending champion, and Molli Detloff and Kyley Foster, who are ranked No. 2 in the weight throw and pole vault, respectively.

Weber, fourth-ranked Detloff and fifth-ranked Keely Walker give UND three of the Big Sky’s top shot-putters entering the weekend. That depth was buoyed by Walker returning from injury earlier than expected prior to the season.

Galbraith hopes youth will be served on the men’s side, where several freshmen will be making their conference meet debuts.

“On the guys’ side, we are really young. We’ve qualified so many freshmen, probably more than I’ve had qualify for a conference championship since I’ve been here,” said Galbraith. “ Our throws crew is always solid and several guys could step up and do some damage.”

The competition begins on Thursday on the campus of Northern Arizona and Galbraith said both of his squads are ready to go.

“We’ve got some talented folks,” said Galbraith. “We will go out there and battle for every place in every event.”
