Eight UND singles wins highlights day one of Drake Invite

DES MOINES, Iowa-- Eight UND singles players are still alive in the winner's bracket of their respective flights at the Drake Invitational after the first day of action. UND suffered just two singles losses and had success in doubles play as well, with the top Fighting Hawk doubles dup advancing to the semifinals.

Carmen Palumbo won 6-3, 6-3 in her singles Flight A match with Creighton's Micahela Henne. Elly Hartnett took her Flight B singles match 6-0, 6-2 while Jaylee Yasunaga (6-2, 6-2) and Zahra Finnigan (6-2, 6-1) were each winners in the Flight C singles draw.

All four UND players in the Flight D bracket were winners with Alysse Nakasato (7-6, 6-1), Alex Revenig (6-0, 6-0), Masha Lobanova (1-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Mary Wessman (6-2, 2-6, 6-3) all victorious.

Palumbo and Hartnett won a pair of doubles matches to advance to the semifinals of the top doubles draw. Isa Sullivan and Yasunaga won their second doubles match to advance in the consolation draw. In the doubles B flight, Nakasato and Wessman are in the consolation semifinals after an 8-1 win in their second match Friday.

Play continues Saturday and concludes Sunday.
