DES MOINES, Iowa-- A pair of singles champions highlighted the final day's action at the Drake Invitational, wrapping up play Sunday. UND won both the B and C Singles Flights and took the third place matches in each of the other two singles brackets.
In the Singles A Flight, Carmen Palumbo won the third-place match, defeating Minnesota's Karyna Bihel, 7-6, 7-5
The B Flight had UND's Elly Hartnett taking the championship, rallying back from losing the first set against Northern Illinois' Maria Potsi to win, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. It was an all-Fighting Hawks final in the C bracket with Zahra Finnigan besting teammate Jaylee Yasunaga, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5. Alex Revenig placed third in the D flight, finishing with a thrilling 1-6, 6-0, 14-12 tally against Drake's Melania Jaglarz.
The top doubles bracket had Carmen Palumbo and Hartnett in the semifinals on the winners' bracket after an opening round win while Isa Sullivan and Yasunaga advanced to the consolation finals.
Alysse Nakasato/Mary Wessman and Revenig/Masha Lobanova teams each advanced to the consolation semifinals in the B pairings.
This weekend's event was a 10-team field including: Augustana (SD), Creighton, North Dakota, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska-Omaha, South Dakota and Upper Iowa.
North Dakota will next compete at the Gopher Invitational, set for Sep. 21-24 in Minneapolis, Minn.
