BISMARCK, N.D. - - The University of North Dakota throwers once again showed their strength and determination while competing today at the University of Mary Al Bortke Open.

“The throwers really led the day for us,” said UND head coach Kevin Galbraith. “As a group, they were the most ready and they had the personal and season-bests to prove it.”

Making the biggest improvement on the day was freshman Makala Keefe. Her personal-record discus throw of 148 feet, 1 inch (45.13 meters) earned her the fifth spot in the Big Sky Conference standings. Keefe’s previous best was 133-00 (40.55) and she now sits in the 10th spot in UND history.

“Makala stood out for us today,” said Galbraith. “She made a huge improvement and 45 meters

for a freshman is a good mark.”

Also in the discus, Molly Griep earned a season-best throw with a mark of 160-07 (48.96). The throw earned her the fourth spot in the conference standings.

With a season-best throw in both the discus and the shot put, Michael Quesenberry led the charge on the men’s side. His shot put mark of 54-01 (16.48) earned him the fourth spot in the Big Sky.

Freshman Andy Samuel earned a personal record in the discus with a throw of 145-03 (44.28).

UND also had several top-three finishes on the day. Those finishes included Blake Hollingsworth with a second-place finish in the 400-meter, Natasha Brown with a third-place finish in the 100-meter, and Nolan Hovland finishing third in the high jump.

UND dominated the women’s pole vault after taking the top-four places. Those jumpers included Kyley Foster, Jadyn Nelson, Adriane Rickert, and Frances Mercil.

The Fighting Hawks will split into smaller teams next weekend to compete at several different meets in both California and Iowa.
