GRAND FORKS, N.D.— Junior UND setter Sydney Griffin was named to the Volleyball Magazine All-America honorable mention team, announced Thursday. The Big Sky Conference Player of the Year becomes UND’s first with NCAA Division I All-America accolades and first since Karla Danielson was a 1991 Volleyball Monthly All-America standout.
Griffin paced North Dakota to a Big Sky Conference regular season championship and the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament after also winning the league’s postseason tournament. She piled up 1,316 assists this season (10.6/set) and hit .296 with 116 kills to quarterback a Fighting Hawk offense which led the Big Sky in kills (1,666) and was second in hitting percentage (.230). The Marshall, Minn., native had nine double-doubles on the season and sits at 2,796 assists going into her senior season, already seventh in UND history.
Griffin has steered UND to a 73-32 record over the past three seasons, tying the school record for most wins in a single year twice (26 in 2014 and 2016). She was the only Big Sky Conference player to by lauded with All-America honors this season.
