UND sits atop the Big Sky’s North Division at 9-3 and is gunning for a top seed in the upcoming eight-team tournament.
FLIRTING WITH A QUAD
Senior setter Sydney Griffin nearly pulled off a very rare quadruple-double in the Oct. 5 match at Sacramento State. She was just two kills shy of pulling the stunt, settling for her first career triple-double (42 assists, 19 digs, 10 blocks) and UND’s first triple-double since Nikki Husfeldt did it back in 2014.
North Dakota is now at No. 16 in the VolleyballMag.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. The Fighting Hawks have been ranked in every week, first appearing in the poll at 15 before moving to 13 then 11 and landing on 10 for the previous two polls prior to this latest stint at 14 and 16, respectively. Now in its second season, the mid-major poll ranks schools not among the power-five conferences (ACC, SEC, Pac-12, Big 10 or Big 12).

Four teams are already into the eight-team field for the Big Sky Conference Tournament as Sacramento State (10-1), North Dakota (9-3), Portland State and Idaho State. There are still four spots up for grabs as we head into the final four matches of the regular season. The tournament will be held at the No. 1 seed.
I CAN DIG IT
Sophomore Alivia Fraase surpassed the 1,000 career dig mark on Oct. 30 against Iowa State. She became the 19th UND player to surpass that mark but just the second to do so as a sophomore (Lauren Clarke, 1,051 from 2012-13). FORMIDABLE FOES FOR FIGHTING HAWKS IN FIRST FORTNIGHT
Those 10 matches in the opening two weekends were against some top talent. Four of the first 10 opponents finished in the top 100 in last season’s RPI rankings. UNLV was 30, Georgia Tech 49, New Mexico State was 79th and Ole Miss ranked 95 in the RPI at the end of last year. North Dakota finished 92 in the final RPI rankings, second only to Northern Arizona (91) in the Big Sky Conference.
North Dakota zapped another “Power 5 Conference” school (ACC, SEC, PAC-12, Big 10 or Big 12) with its 3-2 win over Ole Miss Aug. 25th. It was the second it less than a calendar year after last season’s 3-1 win over the ACC’s Clemson on 9/8/16. UND also defeated Mississippi State from the SEC back in 2014.
The University of North Dakota volleyball program holds a 711-755-3 (.484) record all-time since the first match was played on Sept. 22, 1976.
