Grand Forks, N.D. – University of North Dakota head men’s basketball coach Brian Jones announced the additions of Elijah Hazekamp and Lucas Schmidt to the program’s roster on Thursday. Both Hazekamp and Schmidt signed letters of commitment to play for the Fighting Hawks starting in 2018-19.

Hazekamp is a 6-foot-6 forward that prepped at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City, Iowa, while Schmidt is a 6-foot-10 forward from Watsonville, Calif., who prepped at Monte Vista Christian High School. Both newcomers averaged double-doubles during their final prep seasons and will add some size to the Fighting Hawks’ roster.

“We are excited to add these two young men to our program,” Jones said. “First and foremost, they both possess high character and will impact our campus, community and locker room in a positive way.”

Hazekamp wrapped up his prep career by being named the Sioux City Journal  Player of the Year and earning Class 3A first team all-state accolades for the second consecutive season. He averaged 21.5 ppg and 13.0 rpg during his senior season, recorded 19 double-doubles and made 45 percent of his 3-point attempts (46-102).

“Elijah is a big wing, who can score in a variety of ways. He will stretch the floor with his shooting ability and bring a level of toughness that all coaches love to see,” Jones added. “Defensively, he will be able to guard multiple positions and rebound at a high level for his position.”

Hazekamp finished his four-year varsity run with career averages of 16.3 ppg and 10.9 rpg. “Elijah has a non-stop motor and is a fierce competitor,” Jones added. “He really loves to rebound the basketball on both ends of the floor and can also stretch the floor with his long-distance shooting. He brings a lot to the table and we’re excited to add him to our program.

Schmidt was also a four-year varsity player, earning All-Monterey Bay League honors as a sophomore (second), junior (first) and senior (first). He was also named the MBL’s Gabilan Division Freshman of the Year as well following the 2014-15 season.

“Lucas is a highly-skilled post player,” Jones said. “He can really pass the basketball and score facing up or with his back the basket.  For a young, frontline player, he has a very good feel for the game and his best basketball is definitely ahead of him.”

In his final prep season, Schmidt averaged 11.3 ppg and 11.7 rpg, while blocking 70 shots. As a junior, he averaged 13.5 ppg and 12.6 rpg. Schmidt was also starting pitcher for the Mustangs’ baseball team the past two seasons.
