RENO, Nev. -- Junior Lexi Klabo was named to the five-player All-Big Sky Conference First Team as the league announced its postseason awards ahead of the postseason tournaments. Klabo, a second teamer last season, gives UND a first team honoree in each of the last five seasons.
Klabo leads North Dakota in scoring (18.9), rebounding (9.2) and blocks (2.2) and is among the conference leaders in all three of those statistical categories through the regular season. She is currently fifth in all of NCAA Division I in free throws made (184), making 80 percent of her foul shots this season. She has 13 double-doubles this season and has charted at least 20 points in a game on 15 different occasions. She recently became the 36th UND player to crack the 1,000 career point mark and just the 14th to do so before her senior season.
Top-seeded Northern Colorado's Savannah Smith was named the league's most valuable player. Eastern Washington's Delaney Hodgins, Idaho's Mikayla Ferenz and Weber State's Larryn Brooks joined them on the first team. Brooks, a transfer from Texas Tech, was the newcomer of the year while Portland State' Kylie Jimenez picked up freshman of the year, UNC's Kianna Williams was the defensive player of the year and Idaho State's Estefania Ors was named the league's top reserve.
Freije was selected on the honorable mention team for the second straight season. Despite missing four games down the stretch due to injury, Freije still averaged 13.1 points and 7.3 rebouunds in Big Sky Conference play. Before her injury in her first 11 conference games, Freije avearged more than 15.5 points per game, etching at least 20 on four different occasions. She generated a half-dozen double-double performances this season.
North Dakota is the 10 seed in the upcoming Big Sky Conference Tournament and will face the team it shared last season's regular season championship with, Montana State. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday with the winner advancing to a quarterfinal matchup with two-seed Idaho Wednesday evening.
