DAVIS, Calif. – The University of North Dakota softball team dropped a pair of games on the second day of competition at the Aggie Invitational on Friday, losing to St. Mary’s, 3-2, and to UC Davis, 8-0.

The Fighting Hawks put up a close game against the Gaels to start the day, but with the game tied at 2-2 in the seventh inning, St. Mary’s put together four hits in the top of the frame to score the deciding run. In the nightcap, North Dakota committed four errors, including two in the third inning, against the Aggies and was unable to string together any offense in the shutout loss.

St. Mary’s got on the board with two runs in the first inning to take the early lead, but UND clamped down on defense and ended up tying the game in the fourth.

Taylor Nadler led off the fourth with a base on balls and was later brought home by a double from Angel Love. Love was then able to score with help from both a single by VanDomelen and a St. Mary’s error.

After being held scoreless for five-consecutive innings, the Gaels broke through in the top of the seventh with four hits to score the eventual winning run. Dani Romero singled in the bottom of the inning to get on base, but UND hit into a double play which ended the game.

Hannah Bergh started the contest for the Fighting Hawks, throwing 6.2 innings and Nikki Pica came in for the final out of the seventh inning against the Gaels.

Defense then fell apart for North Dakota in the game against the tournament host UC Davis. After the Aggies took a 1-0 lead behind two hits in the bottom of the first, two errors by UND in the bottom of the third allowed UC Davis to take a 6-0 lead.

The Aggies scored two more runs in the fourth behind two hits and an error, and scored the walk-off run in the bottom of the fifth due to a UND error.

North Dakota finishes off the weekend tournament with a rematch against St. Mary’s tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CT), before taking on Princeton at 1 p.m.
