Elk Grove, Calif. -- It took a little longer than normal, but the North Dakota men's golf team finished up two rounds of play Monday at the Sacramento State Invitational. Sophomore Jeremy Kirk led the charge for the Fighting Hawks, who were 13 strokes better in round two, than their opening round score.
Kirk opened with an 81 (+9), but backed that up with a team-low 78 (+6) to post a 36-hole total of 159 (+15). He was matched in round two by senior Daniel Sayler, who had opened with an 83 to finish two shots off Kirk's pace with a 161 (+17). Junior Jack McClintock ended up at 161 as well, but took a different path, opening with an 82 (+10), then shooting a 79 (+7) during his second loop around the Valley Hi Country Club course.
Freshman Patrick Traynor equaled Kirk with UND's low score in the opening 18 holes as both underclassmen shot an 81 (+9).
Grand Canyone built a 10-shot lead on the remainder of the 13-team field thanks to a 36-hole total of 574 (-2). UC Santa Barbara is the closest squad to the Antelopes after shooting a 584 (+8).
