OGDEN, UTAH - - The University of North Dakota cross country team competed at the Big Sky Conference Championship today as its last regular season meet.

Bismarck, N.D. native Cataldo DiDonna once again led the pack for UND after finishing in the top-half of the competition. The senior earned 41st-place with a time of 26 minutes, 2.8 seconds. It was his highest Big Sky placing of his career.

Finishing behind him was fellow senior Scott Kvidera who finished with a run of 26:44.0. Like DiDonna, that was his fastest conference meet finish. His previous mark was 27:19.0 which he ran at the championship last year.

Sophomore Kyle Sweeney was unable to complete the race due to injury.

“When you lose one of your top-five runners it is hard to make those points up as a team,” said head coach Dick Clay. “That is where our depth is.”

The men’s side was dominated by Northern Arizona and Southern Utah. Both teams entered the competition nationally ranked first and 26th, respectively, and finished 1-2 in today’s team standings.

Coming in first for the North Dakota women was Hannah Oscarson. She earned the 45th spot after clocking a run of 18:43.6.

Freshman Lydia Kantonen ran right along side Oscarson, finishing in 46th with a time of 18:43.9. It was Kantonen’s first official competition as a Fighting Hawk.

“We had six runners who had never competed at the conference meet before,” said Clay. “Everyone ran they best race they could and its promising to see that moving forward.”

“Overall as a team, we saw a lot of improvement from last year,” said Clay. “We are getting closer to placing higher and we are going to use this meet as momentum for next year.”

The Fighting Hawks have a chance to compete once more at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet with the chance to advance to nationals. The meet will take place Friday, Nov. 10 in Ames Iowa.
