HOUSTON, Texas-- The University of North Dakota swimming and diving teams got off to a fast start during day one of the Western Athletic Conference Championships Wednesday. The UND women's 200 medley relay won the first event contested, setting a school-record in the process.

The Fighting Hawk men sit in fourth place through day one while the women are in sixth.

"It was a great start for our program," UND associate head coach Anthony Harris said. "Three school records on the women's side and many personal bests on both sides, definitely a momentum builder as we move into tomorrow. Friday, on paper, is one of our stronger days. It gets all of our training groups involved. The momentum is in our favor with the execution we had this evening."

Maddie Derby, Steph Frey, Katie Breault and Emily Hamel gave North Dakota 40 quick team points with their school-record win in the 200 medley relay. That quartet shaved more than three full seconds off their initial seed time. Their 1:40.51 finish bested a UND record that stood for eight seasons. The 800 free relay placed fourth with a 7:23.99 time that also broke a school record. Breault's lead-off split time of 1:49.33 set a new school mark in the 200 free.

On the men's side, the 200 medley relay took sixth place to start the meet. The 800 free relay was fifth in 6:40.08. The 1-meter dive saw Nick Benson jump up to sixth place in the finals with a 254.20 score. Mitch Raihle was 13th with a 240.00.

The meet continues Thursday with women's 1-meter diving, men's 3-meter diving, 50 and 500 free, 200 IM and the 200 free relay.
