LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Junior Jenna Janu fired an even-par 72 and led North Dakota to its best round of the season in first-round play at the Aggie Invitational Monday. Janu had two birdies and 14 pars in her second par or better round of the season that helped the Fighting Hawks post a 305 (+17) on their first loop around the New Mexico State Golf Course.

Janu made back-to-back birdies on holes eight and nine and is tied for sixth, just two shots behind leader Astha Madan (70; -2) of Sacramento State. UND freshman Ashlyn Guggisberg turned in a solid round as well, posting a 74 (+2) to aid the season-best effort by head coach Natalie Martinson's squad. Guggisberg is tied for 11th, while UND sits in sixth place overall in the 10-team field.

Sophomore Ally Rogers turned in a round in the 70's as well, recording a 77 (+5) in the first round, while junior Hanna Peterson also counted towards the team score with an 82 (+10).

Madan's efforts has the Hornets in the overall lead as well as the Big Sky member holds a seven-shot lead on UTEP (294; +6) after opening with a 287 (-1). The Fighting Hawks are second among the four Big Sky teams competiting in the tournament.

UND continues the 54-hole event with second-round play on Tuesday.
