Goodyear, Ariz. —  North Dakota freshman Ashlyn Guggisberg and sophomore Ally Rogers both rallied with strong second rounds on Monday to help the Fighting Hawks put together a much-improved team score on their second loop around the Golf Club of Estrella.

After the Fighting Hawks opened the Bobcat Spring Invitational with a 321 team score, Guggisberg and Rogers both were a combined 16-strokes better in round two to help trim 10 strokes off that total and end the day with a 632 (+56). UND was in 15th place in the 16-team field after 18 holes, but the Fighting Hawks moved up three spots after Guggisberg carded a 74 (+2) in round two and Rogers followed with a 76 (+6).

Guggisberg's opening round 84 (+12) didn't count towards UND's overall score, but with a round that featured three birdies and a two-under 34 on the back nine, the Fighting Hawk rookie posted the top tally for the team in round two. Rogers was six strokes better after opening with an 82. Rogers' 76 (+4) was her best 18 holes in four spring tournaments.

Grand Canyon takes the top spot in the team standings into Tuesday's final round after overtaking Portland State with a 291 (+3) in the second round. The Antelopes (585; +9) are three shots clear of the Vikings (588; +12), who lead a group of seven Big Sky teams competing in the tournament.

GC's Alexis Linam holds a two-shot lead in the race of medalist honors after posting a 36-hole total of 141 (-3), including a 69 in her second loop.

UND junior Hanna Peterson is two strokes off the pace of her underclassmen teammates at 160 after shootingn a pair of 80's, while classmate Jenna Janu opened the tournament with a 78 (+6) to pace the Fighting Hawks in the opening round. She followed with an 83, while another junior, Benedikte Pettersen, went 81-81 in her opening two rounds.

This is the final tuneup for the Fighting Hawks, who will compete next in the Big Sky Championships in Boulder City, Nev., April 20-22.
